Children ages 5 - 6

2 teachers to 6 children for each session

In Writer’s Workshop, children write for real purposes about things that interest them - writers write about what they know about, and care about. They learn through practice, discussions and studying mentor texts.

What You Can Expect:

  1. Mini-lesson directed by teachers to the whole class group

  2. Skills taught in the mini-lesson vary from each session

  3. Independent-writing time

  4. One-to-one and group discussions between teachers and students

  5. Sharing time where children talk about their ideas and pieces written

Why Writer's Workshop?

Students are encouraged and allowed to write freely about a topic of their choice, and will not be corrected on their spelling or sentence structure.

The focus of this writing process is for them to construct an overall idea, and teaching them about the craft of writing.

Through this process of continuous free-writing, the students will start to learn about spelling and the conventions of writing in a self-discovery manner. The teacher in the Writer’s Workshop is a facilitator who asks questions to help students build upon their own ideas.
